Featured Artist - Jim Ulrich

Let me introduce you to my friend Jim. When I first met Jim, through my husband, I knew that he was a former-banker-turned-artist. At least, that was the impression I got from my husband. When I saw his studio and work, I knew that he was an artist who had a previous career in banking. There's a fine distinction between the two descriptions, don't you think?

Jim paints mostly in "Plein Air" style, which means that he goes out into nature, and paints it as it's happening around him. He has an amazing grasp of light and color, especially as it relates to our unique sunshine here in New Mexico.

His landscapes range from completely realistic to stylized and abstracted.  Some are almost photographic, while others give an impression of a moment in time.

I'm always impressed by artists (of any style) who can capture the feel of a place and/or time, rather than just the picture of it. Some of my favorite of all Jim's paintings are those that are reminiscent of Georgia O'Keeffe's landscapes, including those which he painted near Abiquiu, where she lived and worked.

Jim's become a friend, as well as an artistic inspiration to me. And I'm completely smitten with his lovely wife Trisa, and dog, Zorro. You can find out more about Jim Ulrich, and see many more of his paintings on his website www.jimulrich.com.
